Sports: Water skiing
Water skiing makes it necessary to contract the dorsal and lumbar
muscles in order to maintain the body posture, while the arms must
exert force to maintain a flexed position in spite of pulling the
body's weight. This can overload the dorsal and lumbar muscles if
the person is not strong enough.
In the practice of mono-ski, one leg is in front of the other.
In that posture the dorsolumbar muscles have to exert a greater
effort, and muscle contractions can occur more easily.
It is recommended
To follow an exercise program to develop the spinal column
musculature. Exercises that are adequate for some may prove inadequate
for others; it is therefore convenient to undergo a physical examination
and a muscle assessment by a physician to determine the best program
for each individual case.
To do stretching exercises and some flex movements of the
spinal column before and after skiing.
To ski flexing the knees, and use only the knees to compensate
for the lack of balance that can be produced by the waves.
