Basis, indications and risk
Electromyogram
It consists of teaching the patient to relax while an electromyogram,
which registers muscle activity, is taken.
Objective
To teach the patient to relax the muscles.
Theoretic Base
Muscle
contracture is an important component of back pain. The mind
controls the contracture of the muscles, and can also influence
their relaxation.
There are empirical data which suggest that, with adequate training,
the mind can influence controlled functions in an automatic manner,
like blood pressure or the degree of muscle contracture.
Conditioning techniques are used in electromyografic feedback to
teach the patient how to relax the muscles.
Scientific Proof of its Efficacy
Studiesindicate
that electromyografic feedback is not effective in the treatment
of chronic cases, and does not obtain better results than relaxation
training without an electromyogram. There are no studies on its
effect in acute cases.
Indications
Since there is no scientific proof of its efficacy, it is not
possible to establish indications for its use.
