were obtained from
AHCPR: Clinical Practice Guideline
of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research of the United
States of America. This Agency summoned a multidisciplinary panel
of experts to define standards for the diagnosis and treatment of
patients with acute lower back problems (of less than 3-month's
duration). With this aim, experts compiled and evaluated scientific
studies published until 1992 and consensus was used in fields where
conducted studies were not sufficiently conclusive to determine
a recommendation. The original document source citation is:

CSAG: Recommendations from the British Clinical Standards Advisory
Group. This group conducted a similar project although it was more
focused on management within the British Public Health System. Recommendations
included a clinical management guideline, but considerations are
not completely based in previously conducted scientific studies:
A list of the reviewed studies was not provided. The main part of
its recommendations were reviewed and updated by the RCGP. The original
document's source citations are:

RCGP: Clinical Guidelines from the Royal College
of General Practitioners in the United Kingdom. With an identical
working methodology, a group of experts and organizations, led by
the British Royal College of General Practitioners updated the AHCPR
and CSAG guidelines including scientific studies published up to
April 1996. The RCGP guidelines are intended for Primary Care physicians,
and do not address treatments specific to Specialized Care, such
as surgery. Non-British investigators and experts in back pain cooperated
in the construction of the RCGP guidelines. Once they were concluded,
guidelines were reviewed and approved by back pain experts from
Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States of America. The original
document may be found in the RCGP Web (http://www.RCGP.org.uk).
